PIERDREI
Hamburg, Deutschland | 2019

Hamburg, Germany | 2019
The founders of Hamburg’s Miniaturwunderland, Schmidt’s Tivoli, and a Hamburg Hotelier have created a hotel with 212 rooms, a kid and teens area, a restaurant, a bar, and a stage. For those seeking a bit of adventure, campers on the roof offer a unique hotel stay. The hotel does not have a specific target group – the design aims to create an inviting and inclusive atmosphere for families, business travelers, locals and more!
The interior design of the hotel plays on proportions and perspectives in many different forms, with many tongue-in-cheek details. In addition, Hamburg’s hanseatic flair is tastefully incorporated through a variety of design elements. Guests arriving at the hotel can already spot some of these details at the reception counter, where a miniature shark is chased by an oversized goldfish and a giant anchor chain hangs from the ceiling. Another take on proportions can be found in the hallways: small dioramas in various shapes and sizes feature an intriguing glimpse of miniature worlds.
In the bar, pendant lamps resembling a fishing net trap hang over the brass tables, complemented by red velvet and leather upholstery. Guests looking for a comfortable seat can choose amongst the many cozy vintage armchairs in the lounge, or even watch a performance from one of the red velvet chairs or sofas in the theatre – the “Hafenbühne”. In the adjacent restaurant, the incredibly high walls of the space again underline the themes of proportion and perspective. The walls are decorated with over 200 images of culinary dishes from around the world, a feature befitting the concept of the “Kitchens” restaurant. The equally high shelving in the lounge houses countless books and vintage items from around the world – a reference to the global connections that have emerged through Hamburg’s seafaring history.
In the hotel rooms, guests can retreat to their private, calm oasis, with a view over the Hafencity and towards the famous Elbphilharmonie. Another brief for the interior design was to ensure that the barrier-free rooms resemble the design of the other rooms as closely as possible. With carefully thought-out solutions, some creative design choices allowed materials and finishes to be implemented without adversely impacting the functionality of the space.
Pierdrei is an inviting hotel for guests from all walks of life, guaranteeing a boredom-free stay. It is not only intended for German and international guests; it is also meant to be a “living room” for Hamburg locals, who can enjoy a meal or a drink in the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant and bar.
